Key to NY

Key to the City by Paul Ramirez Jonas sounds like an amazing art project. for me the idea evokes such child-like feelings... following a treasure map to the secret places only the adults know about... finding the hidden door or box, having your very own key, each door you unlock like a little present waiting to be discovered...(what's this switch? did you just turn that streetlight on?!) sounds like so much fun!! check it out!

i want this swim suit from Seventh Wonderland, and the tan lines that come with it! (available at Free People)Thursday, May 20, 2010
Heather Knight
i love the work of Heather Knight at Element Clay Studio on etsy. her forms are aquatic and lovely. keeping them in soft chalky white with only a light glossy glaze to accent the insides makes for such a beautiful sea bleached pallette. i am often reminded of my sister when i see these.

a work of fiction?
so i just started reading Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel . i literally just started (i am only on page 14) but i am loving this excerpt where Henry, the main character and an author, is trying to get a Flipbook published:
"Where do you see the book being displayed?" asked the bookseller, as he chewed on his food with an open mouth. "In the fiction section or the nonfiction?"
"Ideally both," Henry replied.
"Not going to happen. Too confusing. Do you know how much stock a bookstore handles? And if we have to worry about turning the book every which way so the right cover is facing out, we'll never see the end of it. And where are you going to put the bar code? It always goes on the back cover. Where do you put a bar code on a book with two front covers?"
"I don't know," said Henry "On the spine."
"Too narrow."
"On the inside flap"
"Cashiers can't be opening the book up, looking for it everywhere. And what if the book is plastic wrapped?"
"On a little wraparound band."
"They tear and fall off. And then you don't have a bar code at all- a nightmare."
"I don't know then. I wrote my book on the Holocaust without worrying about where the fucking bar code would go."
ah, the constraints of corporate culture on the creative process. sounds awfully familiar...

Sophie Blackall
Sophie Blackall has received a good amount of attention for her "Missed Connections" artwork. a quote from her etsy shop- "Her Missed Connections project is an ongoing series of paintings based on real, anonymous messages posted online by lovelorn strangers." based of course on Craigslist's famous missed connections section. the above piece I wish I could see inside your head is a particularly lovely print from the collection. check out more at her etsy shop.Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Mel Robson

some amazing pieces by ceramic artist Mel Robson. i particularly love the recipe bowls. as described by Mel- "Each bowl is decorated with a poem or a recipe in the handwriting of some pretty amazing women in my family. I got quite sentimental as they sat there all together on my workbench, this little collection of bowls covered in the handwriting of sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers." i love the fragile quality of the bowls, the translucence that allows you to see the handwriting right through them... a pretty good day
this has been a tough year to stay positive. my health has been an issue, and many times it has felt like the world is not on my side. but today, well, it’s a pretty good day. and a pretty good day is better than i’ve had in a while. it is friday, for one. second, i am feeling ok, which is a milestone in and of it’s self. also, I went to the post office this morning to pick up 2 boxes. one- from my mom, homemade cookies (made with love!). two- nailpolish from OPI’s new Alice in Wonderland collection- Mad as a Hatter and Absolutely Alice (a gift from myself). i want to take this little feeling of well-being, wrap it up tight and carry it with me, so i can pull it out whenever i need to. when you are in a bad place, it is hard to remember the world can feel ok.(Escape print by Shannon Sawtelle)

springtime
it is beautiful here today. spring is really in the air, and i am thinking about planting a few things this weekend. considering the size of my patio (think parking space), i will be sticking with herbs and flowers in planter boxes. if i had a real garden, i would snatch up these spoon markers in daisychestnut's etsy shop. love them!Tuesday, April 13, 2010
'hood
it is no secret that i love my neighborhood. apparently others do too! this weeks New York Magazine found Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill to be the 4th best neighborhood to live in, in all of NYC (out of 60 'hoods!) in other polling news, they say that the people who live here are the happiest in NYC :)really?

bare
i seem to be having a moment with all things sheer, clear, transparent and nude. it feels like it is coming from a place where concepts are simple, nude is naive, the meaning of things is transparent, and the truth is clear. it is a clean base upon which to start. a solid foundation based in a reality that finds room for hope and whimsy in the everyday. there is something inherently feminine about it, without being girly. the feeling is captured nicely by Stella McCartney in her Fall 2010 ready to wear line.
