so i just started reading Beatrice and Virgil by Yann Martel . i literally just started (i am only on page 14) but i am loving this excerpt where Henry, the main character and an author, is trying to get a Flipbook published:

"Where do you see the book being displayed?" asked the bookseller, as he chewed on his food with an open mouth. "In the fiction section or the nonfiction?"

"Ideally both," Henry replied.

"Not going to happen. Too confusing. Do you know how much stock a bookstore handles? And if we have to worry about turning the book every which way so the right cover is facing out, we'll never see the end of it. And where are you going to put the bar code? It always goes on the back cover. Where do you put a bar code on a book with two front covers?"

"I don't know," said Henry "On the spine."

"Too narrow."

"On the inside flap"

"Cashiers can't be opening the book up, looking for it everywhere. And what if the book is plastic wrapped?"

"On a little wraparound band."

"They tear and fall off. And then you don't have a bar code at all- a nightmare."

this has been a tough year to stay positive. my health has been an issue, and many times it has felt like the world is not on my side. but today, well, it’s a pretty good day. and a pretty good day is better than i’ve had in a while. it is friday, for one. second, i am feeling ok, which is a milestone in and of it’s self. also, I went to the post office this morning to pick up 2 boxes. one- from my mom, homemade cookies (made with love!). two- nailpolish from OPI’s new Alice in Wonderland collection- Mad as a Hatter and Absolutely Alice (a gift from myself). i want to take this little feeling of well-being, wrap it up tight and carry it with me, so i can pull it out whenever i need to. when you are in a bad place, it is hard to remember the world can feel ok.

it is no secret that i love my neighborhood. apparently others do too! this weeks New York Magazine found Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill to be the 4th best neighborhood to live in, in all of NYC (out of 60 'hoods!) in other polling news, they say that the people who live here are the happiest in NYC :)

i seem to be having a moment with all things sheer, clear, transparent and nude. it feels like it is coming from a place where concepts are simple, nude is naive, the meaning of things is transparent, and the truth is clear. it is a clean base upon which to start. a solid foundation based in a reality that finds room for hope and whimsy in the everyday. there is something inherently feminine about it, without being girly. the feeling is captured nicely by Stella McCartney in her Fall 2010 ready to wear line.

i just can't stop thinking about McQueen. i have been scrolling through his spring line again. it is just amazing. such a complete vision, from the prints to the shoes, and the silhouettes to the hair, he created a whole world on that runway.

then i remembered one of my favorite McQueen pieces- the rib suitcase from Samsonite black label. maybe it is that little inner goth, the same one that makes me such a Tim Burton fan, but I LOVE this suitcase. he really was a artist.

my husband said something profound yesterday as we were walking through the bitter cold dark at 6:00pm heading towards a superbowl get together. we were discussing winter, and how it is so hard to get motivated to do anything. leaving the house requires an absurd amount of bundling, wrapping, strapping and covering (and still your nose gets froze). and the fact that it gets dark before you leave work just makes you want to crawl into bed at what, during the summer, would just be the start of a lovely evening. but he said "i like to make myself do things, to push over the hump, rather than the hump pushing me over." good plan boo. my friend and co-worker bought this gorgeous braided chain headband from Maison Michel. it has become a serious obsession at our office. after all trying it on, we have been out looking for the less expensive version so we, too, can rock this look. as my other friend said "this is the greatest advance in hair-doing since... well, a long time" it is so simple to use, for those with long hair, and the result is enchanting in a fairytale way.

above, on our red headed friend you can see the original version. and on our dark haired beauty, the budget version... we got it on sale at Free People, and although this particular one is gone, there are some other great headbands there! the trick is all in how you wear it :)

i love valentine's day. growing up, it was always my mom's favorite holiday. we would cut and paste our own valentines, there were always lots of hearts and chocolate, and usually a new pair of cute undies. valentine's were for all our friends, and it never felt like a couples only holiday to me. now, my favorite part of valentine's is the card. i love cards, and have been known to give my husband 2 (or 3 or 4) for any given occasion. sometimes there are too many cute ones to pass up! etsy is, of course, the best place to go online for a variety of unique, creative valentines. a few of my favorites are above. wow. this is incredible. oki sato's moss house, via design*sponge (my all time favorite blogger, i have been following her since day 1!):

Veins of moss pattern the riverbank outside the windows, so we used similar veins of dry moss on the interior walls to subtly connect existing spaces with newly-renovated ones, and the house’s interior environment to its exterior one. Most wallpaper imitates nature through a two-dimensional representation of it, and cladding the walls entirely in moss would simply have been too much. We wanted something in-between, so we applied the moss in a pattern that looked like wallpaper, creating an ambiguous texture that’s neither artificial nor natural.

I am so happy to be back in the world of the living. M dropped me at my office today, to make sure I got in all right, and is meeting me again for the subway home. What an ordeal! I feel so super thankful today. Thankful for M and his patience with me, thankful for my health returning, and for the beautiful blue-skied day that has developed out my window. I am also thankful for my new necklace! I ordered the above necklace from Islamoon on etsy, and received it last week. It was the perfect pick-me-up for a very blah week. It is so beautiful and delicate. The perfect everyday necklace. Thanks Islamoon!

i have been so sick all week. i think this is the first time in my professional life that i have missed a full week of work. i have had a severe case of vertigo- something i have never experienced before and hope never to again. i am resting now, regaining my balance and my strength. my friends and family have been amazing, m most of all. it is time to get back to thinking about happy, beautiful things!
